How to build a UTM link

  1. Paste the page you want people to land on.
  2. Fill in source (newsletter, linkedin), medium (email, social, cpc) and campaign (spring-sale). Use the same spelling every time.
  3. Add term and content only if you run paid search or A/B creative.
  4. Copy the URL, or click Shorten and track this link to get a clean hshr.it link that counts clicks.

Common questions

What are UTM parameters?

Short tags added to the end of a URL (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content) that tell Google Analytics and similar tools where a visitor came from.

Which UTM fields are required?

Google Analytics needs utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign to attribute a session to a campaign. utm_term and utm_content are optional refinements for paid keywords and creative variants.

Should UTM values be lowercase?

Yes. Analytics tools treat 'Newsletter' and 'newsletter' as two different sources. This builder lowercases values and replaces spaces with hyphens for you.

Why shorten a UTM link?

UTM links are long and give away your tagging in the address bar. A short link hides the clutter, is easier to type and share, and hshr.it counts the clicks even if the destination has no analytics installed.

Do UTM parameters survive the short link?

Yes. The short link redirects to the full tagged URL, so Google Analytics sees the UTM parameters exactly as you built them.
